There is no other country quite like South Africa. The adage that we are a world, in one, rings true on many levels. We are a Rainbow Nation, rich in diversity and our wealth of natural resources has charted a global course for our beloved country. Leaders like Nelson Mandela have influenced the way that people, politicians and other nations view us in South Africa today.
Freedom Day is not just a diary entry marking the first democratic elections 29 years ago, it’s a reminder of how incredible South Africa and its people are, despite some challenges. There is more to rejoice than to lament about. That is the treasure of our country. We are lucky enough to call ourselves Mzansi’s people.
Earlier this month SAA also welcomed its new interim board, led by former Minister of Tourism, Mr Derek Hanekom. He is joined by a collective of experts with substantial depth and breadth of experience and knowledge within their particular spheres of expertise. Amongst them, a former colleague returns to the airline, Dumisani Sangweni, whose expertise on alliances and network development will play a key role as SAA surges ahead toward a brighter future.
Former interim chair Professor John Lamola remains on the Board and will continue leading day to day operations as Interim Chief Executive Officer.
SAA’s vision and forward journey is clear, the airline has seven aircraft, and since December 2022, we now operate ten routes excluding the destinations we reach through our codeshare partners. The massive, unwieldy giant (that SAA once was) has been replaced with a smaller airline that expands cautiously. We have learnt from the lessons of the past, every new route is considered carefully to ensure profitability and long-term sustainability.
With a strong management collective and a new, invigorated Board, SAA has taken another step on its journey to restore the pride and confidence in our flag carrier, for all the people of South Africa. With it, the freedom of the skies.
